Building a mailing list is one the main thing you can do to forge a relationship with your customers. With a list of contacts, you can inform them of any updates and special offers, and more importantly, when used properly, you can make repeated sales with a group of trusted customers. Let us look at a few important things to note when you start out to build a list.

When building a mailing list, always set your autoresponder to 'double opt-in'. Once someone has initiated contact with you – and shows a clear interest in your newsletter – you will want them to take the extra step to opt-in once again through email. You will save yourself a lot of trouble (and spam complaints) by employing this simple tactic.

Next, find ways to integrate opt-in forms into your general website layout on each page. Consider putting an opt-in form on the sidebar menu of each page. Additionally, when building a mailing list, consider putting an opt-in form on bottom of each page. Give each visitor the chance to sign up for your list, regardless of where he or she arrives.

Offer a specific benefit for joining your list. For instance, 'join my list in the next week and receive this special report'. This gives visitors a compelling reason to actually join your list, especially if you do not charge them anything to join. Some examples of what you can give are discounts, audios, videos, reports, and ebooks.

After building a mailing list, you might probably get customers emailing you with enquiries. Remember to answer every single email you receive from your list. Many list owners neglect to do this and end up paying dearly for it on message boards. Generating a reputation through word-of-mouth – or virally – is one of the fastest ways to gain credibility or lose credibility. Pay attention to your customers and they will remember you when posting on forums.

Lastly, let us look at one way to build a large list effectively. A good way to do this is to create 'viral' videos. Each of these videos should contain some type of specific tip about your business and should refer watchers back to your site. It might even be a good idea to display the URL of your opt-in list in the corner of each video. Find partners who are interested in showing these videos to their list members and site visitors.

For someone who just started out on a online venture, one may has a tight budget and save on things if possible. However, building a mailing list is one of the things you should not afford not to do. In the long term wise, a list will be of great benefit to you. So get a good autoresponder and start building your list now!
